n the preceding chapters, you ve seen several smaller examples of JavaServer Faces Now it s time to examine a complete, though small, JSF application that ties together all of the topics covered so far This example will also provide a firm conceptual foundation that will help you understand the more advanced concepts in the following chapters It is important to understand that this application was created to demonstrate concepts and is not intended to be an example of the best way to craft a scalable production application In particular, the database interactions are not at all optimized and would probably perform poorly given a large number of concurrent users Also, the application ignores one of the most basic techniques regarding persistence: using a data access layer between the view layer and the database The art of building a scalable persistence layer is a topic well beyond the scope of this book, but the area is well covered in the literature The application is called Virtual Trainer It is a JSF-based Web application that helps an athlete or casual sports enthusiast train for an event Virtual Trainer provides a robust introduction to building a complete JSF application because it neatly integrates all of the concepts presented so far, while introducing some new important topics These include Using page templates in practice, including role-specific content and navigation Using composite components to abstract a part of the application for maximal reuse Displaying and editing tabular data with dataTables Building drill-down row editing from a dataTable Constructing a persistence layer using the Java Persistence Architecture Using the Flash and View Parameters to implement the entire site using the proper GET REDIRECT POST web pattern, with minimal use of the session Use implicit navigation exclusively No <navigation-rules> Use a custom ExceptionHandler to gracefully handle ViewExpiredException events, which happen when the user s session expires due to inactivity This is a common occurrence in Web applications, so any production application must handle such things in a way that doesn t break the user s experience with the application.

If you don t have protections in place, this script will crash your server The interesting thing about fork bombs is that not all of them are intentional Broken applications, systems under denial-of-service attacks, and sometimes just simple typographical errors entering commands can lead to bad things happening By using the limits described in this chapter, you can mitigate the risk of a fork bomb by restricting the maximum number of processes that a single user can invoke While the fork bomb may still cause your system to become highly loaded, it will still likely remain responsive enough to allow you to log in and deal with the situation, all the while hopefully maintaining the services offered It s not perfect, but it is a reasonable balance between dealing with the malicious and not being able to do anything at all

Because a 0 is listed for Owner, no permissions are removed from the default mode for a file or directory owner However, because a 2 is listed for Group and Other, the write permission is removed from the default mode whenever a file or directory is created in the file system The function of umask is shown in Figure 7-36 The default value of umask works for most Linux admins However, there may be situations where you need to tighten up or loosen the permissions assigned when a file or directory is created in the file system To do this, you need to change the value assigned to umask This can be done in two ways First, if you only need to make a temporary change to umask, you can enter umask value at the shell prompt For example, if you wanted to remove the execute permission that is automatically assigned to Others whenever a new directory is created, you could enter umask 023 This would cause the write permission (2) to be removed from Group upon creation as well as write (2) and execute (1) from Others This will effectively disallow anyone from entering the new directory except for the directory owner or members of the owning group This is shown in Figure 7-37

The core benefit of JSF components is only realized if they are easy to deploy into an application By following some simple naming conventions, it is possible to produce a single jar file that can properly describe itself to the JSF runtime In this case, the only installation necessary is to drop a jar file into WEB-INF/lib and declare the Facelet tag library at the top of any Facelet page that uses one of the components
