You ll note that the Group employs a Rectangle as a clipping area. Clipping areas are the way to show only a restricted view of a scene graph. Without this, the List nodes would spill outside the boundary of our ListPane. The clipping assignment creates the view port behavior our node requires, as demonstrated in figure 6.8. Let s look at the animStart() function, which kicks off the inertia animation. The delta parameter is the number of pixels the pointer moved in the mouse-dragged event immediately before the button release. We use this to calculate how far the list will continue to travel. If the mouse movement was too slow (less than 5 pixels), or the List too small to scroll, we exit. Otherwise a Timeline animation is set up and started. The list was our most ambitious piece of scene graph code yet. The result, complete with hover effect as the mouse moves over the list, is shown in figure 6.9. Even though it supports a lavish smooth scroll and animated reactions to the mouse pointer, it didn t take much more than a couple of hundred lines of code to write. It just shows how easy it is to create impressive UI code in JavaFX. In the next section we ll delve into the exciting world of multimedia, as we plug our new list into the project application and use it to trigger video playback.

Hibernate offers some algorithms that can prefetch User objects. The first optimization we now discuss is called batch fetching, and it works as follows: If one proxy of a User must be initialized, go ahead and initialize several in the same SELECT. In other words, if you already know that there are three Item instances in the persistence context, and that they all have a proxy applied to their seller association, you may as well initialize all the proxies instead of just one. Batch fetching is often called a blind-guess optimization, because you don t know how many uninitialized User proxies may be in a particular persistence context. In the previous example, this number depends on the number of Item objects returned. You make a guess and apply a batch-size fetching strategy to your User class mapping:

Microsoft states that a single server (if of suitable hardware specification) will support 10 agentless-managed computers per management server and 2,000 agent-managed computers per management server. Experience has shown that this configuration should only be used if you are monitoring less than 200 agents, do not require reliance on the infrastructure, and have a monitored environment that is not expected to grow in the foreseeable future. You can expand the infrastructure at a later stage if you are required to add management servers and separate databases to individual servers.

Indexes that are either not used or used infrequently not only consume additional space, but they also lengthen maintenance routines and slow performance, given the need to keep them updated in line with the base table data. As an example, consider an index on a FirstName column in a very large customer table and a query such as select * from customers where FirstName = 'John'. A lack of understanding as to why SQL Server is unlikely to use such an index may cause a junior DBA to create it in the hope that it may improve performance. Usually, such indexes are left in place without any follow-up analysis as to whether or not the index is being used. Before we look at techniques for removing indexes, let s cover a very important DMV, sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats, to help us in this task. SYS.DM_DB_INDEX_USAGE_STATS As the name implies, the sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats DMV returns information on how indexes are being used. For each index, counts are kept on the number of times the index has been scanned, updated, and used for lookup or seek purposes, since the SQL instance was last restarted.
